Scorpio and the Death card: why the sign of death is also rebirth

Astrolith ·

Scorpio is the eighth sign of the zodiac, Oct 23 – Nov 21. Its ruler is Mars, and the Sun arrives as the autumn leaves fall. Its tarot card is XIII, Death, which means change rather than dying: one thing ends so something new can begin. Endings followed by new life: that is why Scorpio is the sign of death and rebirth.

Mars, Scorpio’s ruler

Scorpio’s traditional ruler is Mars, the planet of drive and desire; modern astrologers add Pluto. At the scorpion’s heart sits Antares, a red star whose name means “rival of Mars”.

The season of falling leaves

Every late October the Sun enters Scorpio, just as the leaves come down in the northern hemisphere. Halloween and the Day of the Dead both fall in Scorpio season: the time of year when the world turns toward endings.

Scorpio and Orion

In Greek myth, the hunter Orion boasted that he would kill every beast on earth, so a scorpion was sent to stop him. The gods set both in the sky, half a sky apart, never to meet: when Scorpius rises in the east, Orion sets in the west.

Taurus, Scorpio’s opposite across the zodiac, sets along with Orion. The two signs are read as a pair: Taurus holds on to what is “mine”; Scorpio wants what is “ours”.

A fixed water sign

Scorpio is water, so its feelings run deep. It is also fixed, so once it decides, it holds on.

Scorpio in the birth chart

Where Scorpio falls in a chart changes how it shows up:

  • Sun in Scorpio: feels deeply, but rarely says so.
  • Moon in Scorpio: opens up only once trust is earned.
  • Scorpio rising: reads people well, and gives little away.
  • Scorpio Descendant: drawn to deep, honest people.

Tarot card XIII: Death

Twelve of the tarot’s 22 major cards belong to the twelve signs, and Scorpio’s is XIII, Death. On the 1909 Rider–Waite–Smith card, a king has fallen: even the longest reign ends. On Death’s black banner blooms a white rose, a sign of life. And far off, between two towers, the sun is rising on a new day.

Drawn upright, Death means change: one thing ends to make room for the new. Drawn reversed, it means change that is stuck: holding on and refusing to let go, or stopping halfway.

Why Scorpio means death and rebirth

A scorpion has to shed its shell to grow. Falling leaves and the Death card are endings; the white rose, the sunrise and the new shell are new life. First an ending, then new life. That is why Scorpio is the sign of death and rebirth.

Stones for Scorpio

In Astrolith readings, Scorpio is paired with black obsidian, malachite and rhodonite, stones of depth and transformation. A full reading also looks at the Moon and Rising sign.
