Obsidian meaning: volcanic glass and zodiac sign

Obsidian is natural volcanic glass. It forms when molten rock cools too fast for crystals to grow, so geologists call it a mineraloid rather than a mineral. It’s known as a stone of protection, grounding and inner truth, and it is most often black. In Astrolith readings it is paired with Scorpio.

What does obsidian mean?

Black obsidian is known as a protective stone and a grounding one. It’s also linked with facing your inner truth, your shadow side. Many people wear it as a reminder to stay steady and honest with themselves.

Its practical history is far older. Obsidian breaks with smooth, curved fractures that leave very sharp edges, and people once shaped it into knives, arrowheads, spear points, scrapers and other tools.

Which zodiac sign is obsidian for?

In Astrolith readings it is paired with Scorpio. In a reading it can stand for a Sun, Moon or Rising sign in Scorpio, and it brings its themes of protection and inner truth into the design.

How do you choose obsidian?

Black is the most common colour; blue, red, orange and yellow obsidian are rare. Some pieces show a sheen and are sold as rainbow, golden or silver obsidian. Our beads are glossy and smooth, listed as natural, and come in 8, 10 and 12 mm.

How do you care for obsidian?

At about 5.5 on the hardness scale, obsidian scratches easily. It isn’t tough either, so a knock can chip or break it. Take it off before sport or rough work, and store it apart from harder stones. Warm water with a few drops of mild soap and a soft brush is enough; dry the beads with a soft cloth.
