What does smoky quartz mean?

Smoky quartz is known as a grounding stone, tied to protection and to letting go of what no longer serves you. Many people choose it as a quiet reminder to put down what they don’t need to carry.

It is also Scotland’s national gem. There it is called cairngorm, after the Cairngorm Mountains.

Which zodiac sign is smoky quartz for?

In Astrolith readings it is paired with Sagittarius and Capricorn. In a reading it can stand for a Sun, Moon or Rising sign in either one, and it brings its themes of grounding and letting go into the design.

How do you choose smoky quartz?

Smoky quartz runs from a light yellowish brown to a brown so dark it looks black. The colour forms when natural radiation from the surrounding rock acts on traces of aluminium in the crystal.

Some smoky quartz on the market is clear quartz darkened by irradiation in a laboratory, and very dark stones are sometimes heated to lighten them. Ask us about any bead and we’ll tell you what our supplier states about its treatment.

How do you care for smoky quartz?

At 7 on the hardness scale it’s hard enough to wear every day. Heat can lighten its colour, so keep it away from high heat. Warm water with a few drops of mild soap and a soft brush is all it needs; dry the beads with a soft cloth.
