Fluorite meaning: symbolism, softness and care
Fluorite is a calcium fluoride mineral that comes in purple, green, yellow and other colours. It’s the mineral that marks 4 on the hardness scale, so it’s soft. It’s known as a stone of intuition, protection and focus. In Astrolith readings it isn’t tied to one sign; it comes up when a reading points to protection.

What does fluorite mean?
Fluorite is known as a stone of intuition, protection and focus, and it’s linked with clearing away chaotic thoughts. People wear it as a protective symbol.
The name comes from the Latin fluere, “to flow”: the mineral melts easily and is used as a flux in smelting. It gave science a word too. In 1852 George Gabriel Stokes saw fluorite glow blue and named the effect fluorescence, after the stone.
Is fluorite linked to a zodiac sign?
In Astrolith readings it isn’t tied to one sign; it comes up when a reading points to protection. That means it can sit beside any Sun, Moon or Rising sign.
How do you choose fluorite?
Fluorite is usually purple, green or yellow, and also turns up colourless, blue, red and black. We offer it in two shades, mint green and green.
Because it’s so soft and splits so easily, fluorite is mostly a collector’s stone, or one for jewellery that won’t meet knocks or rubbing. Check beads for smooth, unchipped surfaces first. Dyeing, heating, irradiation and coatings are all used on fluorite in the trade.
How do you care for fluorite?
At 4 on the hardness scale, with perfect cleavage in four directions, fluorite scratches and chips easily. It isn’t a stone for rings, and a fluorite bracelet is best worn now and then, away from knocks and hard surfaces.
It dissolves very slightly in water, so never soak it. Clean it with a warm damp cloth, a little detergent and a soft brush, and never use a mechanical cleaner. Some fluorite fades in long exposure to light, so store it out of the light.
