Aquamarine meaning: March birthstone, Libra and Pisces
Aquamarine is the blue to greenish-blue variety of beryl, the same mineral as emerald, and the birthstone for March. Its name comes from the Latin for “seawater”, and it’s known as a stone of peace and courage. Most aquamarine sold today is heated for a purer blue. What does aquamarine mean?
Aquamarine is known as a stone of peace and courage, a cool, clear blue for people who want to feel steady.
Its sea lore is old. The name comes from the Latin for seawater, and ancient sailors claimed it would calm the waves and keep them safe at sea. It is also the gem for the 19th wedding anniversary.
Which zodiac sign is aquamarine for?
In Astrolith readings it is paired with Libra and Pisces. Birthstone charts that match months to signs also set March, aquamarine’s month, beside Pisces. In a reading it can stand for a Sun, Moon or Rising sign in either one. Its peace and courage also bring it up when a reading points to calm or confidence.
How do you choose aquamarine?
The most prized colour is a moderately strong dark blue to slightly greenish blue, but most aquamarine is a light greenish blue. Faceted stones are usually clean to the eye; stones with visible inclusions tend to become cabochons, beads or carvings. Bead-grade aquamarine like ours is often softly milky.
Heating is common in the trade, and most aquamarine on the market has been heated to give it a purer blue. We offer two tones, pale blue and deep blue.
How do you care for aquamarine?
At 7.5 to 8 on the hardness scale it’s a durable stone for jewellery, as long as you treat it with care. Its colour is stable in light, but keep it away from heat. Warm soapy water is always safe. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are usually fine unless a stone has liquid inclusions or fractures, so for milky beads, soap and water is the simpler choice.
